Last week in the Food For Thought Series
ended the Topic on FAITH. (Fantastic Adventures in Trusting Him)
and if you missed any part or parts please feel free to go back
and read them. This series is brought in order to give you
spiritual food for prayers, meditation, studies, worship for the
greatest book ( The word of God, The Bible) in the World. We as
Christian have the greatest resources that God has given us
through the God-Head The Holy Trinity . This week
our topic is WHO IS THIS HOLY TRINITY? HOW CAN THE TRINITY
BE ONE, YET THREE?
It is very hard to comprehend that The Holy
Trinity is the Union of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.
How Can This Be? They are their own person with distinct works
that they do. One example that helps with some comprehension is:
Water is three in one being it is a liquid, can become steam
that can become liquid again and also become ice a solid until
it melts. Hey this is God, he can do anything! Nothing is
impossible with God.
Another example would be: God gives Jesus the
order to turn on the light switch and then the Holy Spirit would
be the power (electric) so that the light bulb comes on. These
are just examples that to assist to understand that the Trinity
is three in one with different functions.
The Trinity was there from the very beginning
in Genesis1:26 (NKJV) Then god Said “Let US
make man in Our Image,
according to Our Likeness let hem have dominion
over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over
the cattle, over all earth and over every creeping things that
creeps on the earth.” When you start with Genesis 1:1 says,
“ In the beginning God Created the heavens and the earth,”
and Genesis 1:2 where we are told “the spirit of god was
hovering over the waters,” What does this tell us about the
Trinity? This can be confusing until you realize that The Holy
Spirit is the breath of God and that He is The Power and
Presence of God.
This is the first biblical reference to the
Holy Spirit. We will further explore Who The Holy Spirit is
later in these topics of study.
Throughout Israel’s history in the Old
Testament there is a concept of a single God rooted deeply in
the consciousness of the Jews and Christians. The OT shows
through their development starting with polytheism (belief in
many Gods), then went to believing in One God without denying
other Gods to (monotheism) believing in one God only. By
studying the scriptures, there is much about Israel’s History
with God concerning their beliefs and what they went through.
As we progress further into Who the
Trinity is then it brings us into the New Testament where
you can see distinction as to their functions. This also may
bring the Question of: is there an order and placement of the
Trinity? There is no less importance placed on any single
part of the Godhead. The placement of the Three persons of the
Trinity in the New Testament has to do with their order and
function. We say that we pray to the Father through the son and
in the power of the Holy Spirit. Functionally the Father came
first, then the Son (Jesus) became incarnate, died and rose
again. (God gave His only Son) Now the Holy Spirit does
his work in this age of the Spirit. When we are reborn the Holy
Spirit dwells within us and leads us in all truths. This order
doesn’t have anything to do with being equal, but only with
function and chronology.
Read in Colossians 1: where Paul is writing a
letter to the Church at Colossae about the Lord Jesus Christ,
among other truths he tells us (Col 1:16-20 (NIV) ,For by him
all things were created; thing in heaven and on earth, visible
and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or
authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is
before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he
is the head of the body, the church, he is the beginning and the
first born from among the dead, so that in everything he might
have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness
dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all
things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making
peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
In the N. T. we read about Jesus , his
ministry, his crucifixion where he died and conquered death, and
50 days after he arose he ascended into heaven to sit on the
right hand side of God the Father to judge the quick and the
dead. We see what some of his functions where and are to this
day. You can also see many distinct works of the Holy Spirit
throughout the O.T. and especially in Acts. If Jesus had not
left to be at the right hand side of God then the Holy Spirit
could not dwell within us. This is another resource that we have
as reborn Christians, as we strive to become more Christ Like.
Paul says “There is one body one Spirit just
as also you were called in one hope of your calling.”
In the Gospels of Matthew you read about the
Baptism that is linked to repentance and forgiveness of sins,
accepting to be reborn of the Spirit. In Matthew Jesus goes to
John the Baptist to be baptized. Baptism is Trinitarian in the
Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the books of Acts
there is much more about being baptized in the Holy Spirit,
indwelled, filled and overflowing. (Baptism will be explored at
some later date) Most Churches baptize in the Name of The
Father, The Son, and Holy Spirit.
Every Christian should accept the essence of
the Holy Trinity to be The Father, The Son, The Holy Spirit
together where creating the world. It is vital for Christians to
understand and accept the Godhead (Trinity) in your faith.
